181. Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.
(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms' survival
I did get the correct answer at B but was confused between B and E. The OE for not E is as follows.
In choice E, the illogical and awkward use of a prepositional phrase (for firms' survival)
buries the needed initial reference to firms in a possessive modifier
Someone please explain

"such firms" requires an antecedent.
So A,C, D are out.
"firms' survival" is possessive and "such firms" can't refer back to it. E out
Moreover, because of X -> X should be noun or noun phrase. So, "required" should act as adjective not verb.

It saved alteast 10 seconds even in this question, i guess(as underlined part was short)
any way thanks....may not be big issue but it really helps....
I was thinking until now that 'required of' is unidiomatic, but hey, its OG and u can't challenge it!
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.
