OG 10 # 220

For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788, England exiled some 160,000 criminals to
Australia.

(A) For almost a hundred years after having its beginning in 1788,
(B) Beginning in 1788 for a period of a hundred years,
(C) Beginning a period of almost a hundred years, in 1788
(D) During a hundred years, a period beginning in 1788,
(E) Over a period of a hundred years beginning in 1788,

OA - E

Doubt ---
Why is B incorrect? I though the initial part i.e "Beginning ..... years," is an adverbial modifier (comma+VERBING category) that modifies the following clause i.e. it talks about when the exile begun and stuff.....
Why does it get considered an adjectival modifier modifying England.

Please guide me if am missing any concept here.

I saw that this question has been posted earlier but by reading them, I could still not clear my doubt.

The structure of the phrase 'Beginning in 1788 for a period of a hundred years' in B seems to suggest that England began in 1788. Probably a comma after 1788 may have made it appropriate. 'Beginning in 1788, for a period of a hundred years'
Whereas, E clearly refers to the period.

Hope this helps.

I am sorry, still have the same doubt. I am anxious to know why it looks like a adjectival modifier when it can be looked at as a typically adverbial modifier talking something about the action/adding more information about the action...

When did the action of exiling the criminals happen. The answer is it began in 1788 and went on for a hundred years.

Am I missing something?

Choice B is not only ambiguous (is "beginning" modifying "England", or is it in an absolute phrase?), but also suggests that something began over a period of 100 years. Lest that sound implausible, consider Beginning throughout the early 1st century AD, Mithraism was practiced in the Roman Empire for 300 years.
