Hello,

Thanks for sharing your time.

I'm 32 old Asian(korean) male and working as marketing director and New Product development in IT Telecommunication Company in Korea.
I wanna go to MBA because I feel I have to get more skills and experience about high level strategy building , general management,
Fund raising and internationally interpersonal skills as well..

- My Short term goal : to manage the Multinational firm that has the FMCG

- Long Term goal : to establish and manage my own company that has the valuable products towards the international people..

- The reason to take MBA : not just be a marketing director but to have the experience as the founder and owner of the company, the experiences from fund-raising , organization setting, product development to finance taks.

With thest reasons, I am interested in the following MBA programs:
1) Michigan - Ross
2) Indiana - Kelley
3) Cornell - Johnson
4) Boston College- Carroll

My GMAT Score is 690 (V 34 M 49) and GPA is 3.1

My question is as below.

Q1) When I mentioned 'Why MBA" in Essay, I'm confusing how to express the reason why I do.
If I say, "because I'm lack or weak in that skills that I did not have much involve such as fund raising or HR ", AD Com seem to guess me as a not well organized, not prepared person.
On the other hand, If I say "because I'd already have but want to improve", then they feel "then why don't you keep moving your way? we think you can gain relevant experiences in your job".

What do you think it's the best way and manner to mention my motivation to go to MBA ?

Q2) With my Career goal, the schools that I mentioned are adequates?
And do I stand a chance of getting into?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

Dear Sputt222,

I think you have a chance at your target schools, but so much will depend on how well you put together your overall application package. Your GMAT is a little low relative to the international pool from Asia, but you are in range. If you feel you have unique experiences and strong leadership, then it might not be worth retaking the GMAT. I do think these schools are appropriate choices for you.

With regards to your answer for "why MBA", it is not a negative to say that you lack some skills that the MBA will give you. Likewise, it is reasonable to say you want your MBA to gain exposure to other disciplines and industries. You need to present a solid rationale on why you want a MBA so that the admissions committee knows you understand what business school is and how it is a critical step in your long-term career plan.

Good luck,
Lisa

Lisa,

Thanks for your answer.

I have additional Questions.

Q1) Except the schools that I'v already mentioned, which schools are more likely to be accepted while appropriate and feasible to go through my career plan?
(ie. form Top 15 ~ 50 range in US)

Q2) If other conditions being equal, what do you think about that which GMAT score is not ' a little low" but suitable for get the chance to go further step to "Asian person' who has and want to focus on the marketing and general management category?

Q3) what do you think about the adequate TOEFL score?

I'm afraid that I have to ask you nothing but a "figure" stuff

but I think "How am I diffierent from others " can be difficult to define

just with working experiences or academic backgrounds in this session..

Thanks..~

Dear sputt222,

I'm not sure I understand what your follow up questions are asking. MBA admissions is looking at all components of your application from a holistic perspective; you cannot say you have better than/less than chances based on a GMAT score alone. Additionally, there is always a question of fit for a candidate based on the candidate's career goals versus what the program offers. So when you are looking at schools, you cannot select where to apply based on how you measure up on GMAT/GPA alone. These measures are part of the evaluation, but you should identify schools that are a good fit for your career goals first and then narrow your list based on where your profile is a reasonable match. I would encourage you to visit our sticky on school selection for additional tips and insights.

Good luck,
