Kellogg and Haas Weekend Out Of Town Stats

by steiny » Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:01 pm
I was unable to find any data on this. Does anyone know what percent of weekend part time students at Kellogg and Haas commute from out of state to take classes. Booth lists that roughly 50% of their student are not from the Midwest and likewise Ross lists 31% out of state; does Kellogg and Haas draw a similar geographically diverse group of students?

Thanks in advance.

From previous years data, Kellogg : around 60-65% + of the class is not from Chicago.

Not quite sure why you're asking this question, steiny - the schools most definitely do not have a quota system based on in-state/out-of-state, nor would anyone be at a disadvantage in applying to either Kellogg or Haas coming from another state. Haas in particular has been actively recruiting candidates from further away than the SF Bay Area - it's common for students to fly in from LA and Seattle. Similarly, the Wharton EMBA program in SF attracts students from all across the country.

The good news is that both of these schools are much less competitive for applicants interested in their P/T programs. If you're up for the grueling experience of commuting in from a distant location (and you can convince the adcom that you're serious about it and committed to doing it) then there's no reason they'd pass you up. It can make for a *very* challenging MBA experience however!!! Doing bschool while holding down a job is hard enough; trying to do both in different cities can be a lot to juggle. Obviously these are both very good programs though, so it could also be totally worth it!!!!!

Best of luck,

Thank you both for you replies.

For clarification, I was not asking as a question of gaining acceptance, but rather to better understand the environment and whether I would be at a disadvantage due to commuting weekly from out of state. For example, I know Kellogg prides itself in its promotion of setting up team environments and group work; I would hate to be at a serious disadvantage/outcasted from the start because 90+% of students live in close proximity to campus and would likely meet up throughout the week to study/discuss. If a large portion of student are also in my situation, I would feel more at ease.

You will not be at any disadvantage. Its one of the most talked about "Pains for Gains" topic. People flydown from Seoul 12 hour straight.

Do you remember the "Up in the Air"? George Clooney, who plays a consultant who travels over 300 days a year on business). Prepare for that life :)
