Kaplan:Nomenclature

by shubhamkumar » Thu Apr 05, 2012 1:18 pm
Still employing the system of binomial nomenclature devised in the eighteenth century by Linnaeus, new technology enables modern day biological taxonomists to not only classify species, but to sort their evolutionary relationships by an approach that analyzes the sequences of DNA

A- new technology enables modern day biological taxonomists to not only classify species, but to sort

B- modern day biological taxonomists using new technology can not only classify species, but sort

C- using new technology enables modern day biological taxonomists to not only classify species, but to sort

D- using new technology not only in classifying species, but modern day biological taxonomists are enabled to also sort them for

E- When modern day biological taxonomists are enabled by new technology, not only do they classify species, they also can sort

OA:B
Question is why can't new technology employ the system of binomial nomenclature as in A,but only taxomonists can in B?

I think the actual problem with A is that it uses "not only...but" when it should always be "not only...but also."

How can NEW TECHNOLOGY STILL employ the system - new technology means its recently developed..how can then we say it STILL EMPLOYING THE SYSTEM? Its illogical.

This to make sense we need someone/something that (or who, if something is HUMAN)has been using THE SYSTEM. B makes sense.

Furthermore, just to add to what Bill mentioned, NOT ONLY CLASSIFY....BUT TO sort (presence of TO is breaking the parallism)

Yea I agree.

Usually when you see a big clause and a comma after that you should think Modifier.

The first clause doesn't have a subject, so therefore what follows the comma is always the subject.

The question to be instantly asked without even reading the entire statement is who's employing the system. the answer would be biological taxonomists.

That's what follows the comma after the first clause. Modifiers once recognized can be quite easily tackled.

well, the problem in A is " not onnly but to" because the correct form is " not only... but also.
Futhermore, technology is an object, its not a person, technology by itself cant employ a whole system....only B makes sense

Sorry Guys.Made a mistake in the original post(copied it from a different blog).I have corrected the question to what it appears as in the Kaplan test.
Even I was looking for "not only...but also" but this kaplan test question did not have also in choice B.
