GMAT Score:700

Is 720 the new 700?

As most of you know, the percentiles for the GMAT have changed dramatically over the past decade. Back then, a 700 was around 95th percentile. Now, its 90th. Either the test has become easier (which I doubt), the quality of test takers has increased (Very plausible), or the prep companies are doing a better job.

When one looks at the average scores of China and India, it is clear to see what is happening. China's average score is 620! Thats nearly 100 points higher than the American average. India's average is nearly 50 points higher. As more and more people take the test from those countries, its no wonder why the GMAT scores are going up.

Make no mistake, the increase in 700 scores will make it much tougher to get into the top ten universities, all other things being equal (WE, EC, Essays). Expect the average GMAT of Harvard and Wharton to increase markedly.

While the GMAT is only one component of the application, it is the only standard which can be used against all applicants. That said, we mortals with 700 or less need to have stellar essays and recommendations to compete.
