If a snail can move i inches in m minutes, then how many feet it can move in h hours?

Hi Gmat_mission,

To start, I'm going to change the variable "i" to "L" (so that it will be easier to see that variable).

We're told that a snail can move L INCHES in M MINUTES. We're asked for the number of FEET the snail can move in H HOURS. This question can be solved by TESTing VALUES (although you have to pay careful attention to the UNITS involved).

IF...
L=2, M=3, then the snail moves 2 inches in 3 minutes... meaning it moves 40 inches in 60 minutes (re: 1 hour). So, H=1.

1 foot = 12 inches, so that snail will travel 40/12 feet in 1 hour. Thus, we're looking for an answer that equals 40/12 = 10/3 when we plug in L=2, M=3 and H=1 into the answers. There's only one answer that matches...

Final Answer: A

The rate of the snail is i/m inches per minute.

Since h hours = 60h minutes, then in h hours the snail can move i/m x 60h = 60hi/m inches and 60hi/m inches = (60hi/m)/12 = 60hi/(12m) = 5hi/m feet.

Answer: A
