Greenhouse effect

by mgmt_gmat » Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:45 am
Discussion of greenhouse effects has usually focused on whether the
Earth would warm and by how much, but climatologists have indicated all
along that the most obvious effects, and those that would have the largest
impact on people, would be extremes of temperature, precipitation,
and storminess.
A. the most obvious effects, and those that would have the largest
impact on people, would be extremes of temperature,
precipitation, and storminess
B. the effects that are the most obvious ones, extremes of temperature,
precipitation, and storminess, would be those impacting
the most on people
C. those effects to have the largest impact on people, extremes of
temperature, precipitation, and storminess, are what are the
most obvious effects
D. extremes of temperature, precipitation, and storminess, the most
obvious effects, that they would have the largest impact on people
E. extremes of temperature, precipitation, and storminess, which are
the most obvious effects, are those to impact the most on people

IMO A...

mgmt_gmat when you post SC questions can you underline the portion that's incorrect? I found myself rereading this a couple times just to figure out where exactly the underlined portion would start.

:-) thank you

in D "they" is ambiguous and in E "which" doesn't have a clear referant

I agree with the OA Op A, just want to see,

Which ---> refer to the preceding noun phrase / noun

Can, which refer to a series of NOUNS like here in OP E???

I am not sure but I think "which" can't refer to series of nouns...........moreover op E is also wrong because it changes the meaning i.e "to impact the most"

D. extremes of temperature, precipitation, and storminess, the most obvious effects, that they would have the largest impact on people

E. extremes of temperature, precipitation, and storminess, which are the most obvious effects, are those to impact the most on people
IMO A

A is straight forward and concise: the most obvious effects,(NON-Essential), would be extremes of x, y, and z
B: Use of Passive. Also extreme of modifies people . That is wrong
C: are what are the most is awkward. Also extreme of modifies people . That is wrong
D: that they would have is awkward. Also it seems the most obvious effect modifies storminess. that is wrong
E: Seems Awkward. Also I feel which modifies temperature, precipitation, and storminess but what we need here is extremes of temperature, precipitation, and storminess. Not sure.. Also the use are to impact shows the certainity, but here it is uncertain so we need would(as in option A)
