Hi All,

We're told that each week, a clothing salesperson receives a commission equal to 15% of the FIRST $500 in sales and 20% of all ADDITIONAL sales that week. We're asked for the total commission on sales for the week of $1,300. This question comes down to a bit of note-taking and some Arithmetic.

For the first $500, we know that the commission would be 15%.... (.15)($500) = $75
With a total of $1300 in sales, the rest of the commission would be at 20%....
$1300 - $500 = $800 at 20% = (.2)($800) = $160
Total commission = $75 + $160 = $235

Final Answer: C

We can express the solution as:

0.15 x 500 + 0.2(1300 - 500) = 75 + 160 = $235

1300 = 500 + 800

15% commission on $500 = $75 (15/100 * 500)
20% commision on $800 = $160 (20/100* 800)

Total commission on $1300 = $235
