Expensive Jacket

by batbond007 » Mon Dec 28, 2009 5:28 pm
If Jim earns x dollars per hour, it will take him 4 hours to earn exactly enough money to purchase a particular jacket. If Tom earns y dollars per hour, it will take him exactly 5 hours to earn enough money to purchase the same jacket. How much does the jacket cost?

(1) Tom makes 20% less per hour than Jim does.

(2) x + y = $43.75

Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
Both statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER one ALONE is sufficient.
EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

OA after some discussion.

Statement 1: Jim makes x dollars per hour, Tom makes .80(x) dollars per hour.

.80(x)=x

This really doesn't tell us anything.

Insufficient.

Statement 2: If x+y=43.75 then x=43.75-y and 4(43.75-y)=5y.

We can determine the value of y from this.

Sufficient.

The answer is B.
