by aspirant2011 » Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:09 am
Europeans have long known that eating quail sometimes makes the eater ill, but only recently has it been established that the illness is caused by a toxin present in the quail's body only under certain conditions.

(A) Europeans have long known that eating quail sometimes makes
(B) Europeans have long known quail eating is sometimes able to make
(C) Eating quail has long been known to Europeans to sometimes make
(D) It has long been known to Europeans that quail eating will sometimes make
(E) It has long been known to Europeans that quail, when it is eaten, has sometimes made

IMO A
(B) Europeans have long known quail eating is sometimes able to make
---> use of able to is wrong, moreover in GMAT, able to almost always wrong, generally CAN is used instead of ABLE TO
(C) Eating quail has long been known to Europeans to sometimes make

--->Eating quail SINGULAR make PLURAL VERB, doesn't agree

(D) It has long been known to Europeans that quail eating will sometimes make

--->quail eating SINGULAR make PLURAL VERB, doesn't agree

(E) It has long been known to Europeans that quail, when it is eaten, has sometimes made

wordy and unclear and also the use of past tense MADE doesn't seems correct

Hence A

Also, When we are discussing facts or general truth "Simple Present tense" is prefered.

IMHO (A)

Europeans have long known that eating quail sometimes makes the eater ill, but only recently has it been established that the illness is caused by a toxin present in the quail's body only under certain conditions.

(B) Europeans have long known quail eating is sometimes able to make - ackward
(C) Eating quail has long been known to Europeans to sometimes make
(D) It has long been known to Europeans that quail eating will sometimes make - future illnes but recently established?
(E) It has long been known to Europeans that quail, when it is eaten, has sometimes made - I'ts the action of eating quail that makes ppl ill

@ Atulmangal : Can you mention in both the cases below where do you see SUbject Verb agreemlnt or you wrote this in haste ? Certinaly, this is somethiung you dont want :) ..

quail eating will sometimes make .. where do you see S-V agreement in this ?

(C) Eating quail has long been known to Europeans to sometimes make
--->Eating quail SINGULAR make PLURAL VERB, doesn't agree
(D) It has long been known to Europeans that quail eating will sometimes make
--->quail eating SINGULAR make PLURAL VERB, doesn't agree
Answer should be A for this question. @ original poster, can you put your doubts specifically ?
D is wrong for two reaons : 1> Future tense is incorrect 2> 'quail eating ' is incorrect . It should be 'eating quail ' .

Eating fish is good for health .

Fish eating is good for health . (incorrect)
