Difficult Math Problem #92 - Sets

OA coming after some people provide answers. this comes from the difficult math questions doc..

Of a group of 260 people who purchased stocks, 61 purchased A, 88 purchased B, 56 purchased C, 75 purchased D, 60 purchased E. what is the greatest possible number of the people who purchased both B and D?

A:40
B:50
C:60
D:75
E:80

Total No of people= 260

No. of people who purchased A+B+C+D+E =
61+88+56+75+60 = 340

So atleast 340-260 = 80 people would have bought more than 1 stock.

But to buy both B and D it would have to 75 people.

Im sorry answer = 75 people

here's the oa..

ANSWER is D (75)

since they have asked us to find out the greatest possible number buying both B as well as D, the answer has to be the smallest no between the two which is 75...as all the guys purchasing D can also buy B and only 75 out of 88 purchasing B can simultaneously purchase D as well....

from the question, 260 people purchased stocks.
people who purchased stock A = 61
B = 88
C = 56
D = 75
E = 60

The question asked us to find the greatest possible number of people who purchased B and D.
so, adding the total number of people that purchased A,B,C,D,E, we have 61+88+56+75+60=340

340-260= 80 (meaning that at least, one person will buy more than one stock).

To get the greatest possible number of those that purchase stock B and D, then we will consider the least number of stock purchased in these two categories.
since 88 purchased B, and 75 purchased D.
Then, 75 of people who purchased D also purchased B.

so, option D is right
