I am providing the right answer (By) versus the wrong one (As a result of) The direction in which the Earth and the other solid planets --Mercury, Venus, and Mars -- spin was determined [BY/AS A RESULT OF] collisions with giant celestial bodies in the early history of the Solar System. Determined by means the direction of spin was found out by (observing) the collisions. Determined as a result of means the direction of spin was found BECAUSE of the collisions.
