Criticizing mgmt in application essays

by akovalev » Tue Jun 14, 2011 9:19 am
It is conventional wisdom that one shouldn't outright criticize one's current or prior management when interviewing for a new job, no matter how incompetent it was. And surely there is diplomatic language that could get your message across without actually saying that the emperor has no clothes. It seems like this would be more complicated on b-school essays. If you've gone through turbulent reforms (and many have during the recession) and truly learned how not to approach leadership and organizational and technological reforms from your own management, to what extent should you sugar-coat it without seeming like a cheeky smart-ass? Any links to actual examples would be greatly appreciated!

What is the problem with rightfully criticising management?
You should certainly not do this when applying for a new job, because your future boss will think you are as picky and annoying and a smart-ass, like you were in your previous job.

For B School, it's a different story and therefore not such a big problem, I think.
You shouldn't be too blunt and point out how you still managed to do exceptionally well, but why not call thinks as they are?

I'm guessing that it could be taken as a lack of diplomatic skills. In leadership positions, one may have to liaise with entire departments, companies, or agencies whose contribution to the business or society is, well, questionable, but nevertheless one has to make the relationship work. But, as far as I come to understand now, some b-school applications essays (depending on the topic) are meant to be somewhat of a confession, where honesty is not punished...

you definitely do not want to be negative, it just comes off badly. focus on yourself, perhaps what you learned from a not ideal situation but don't attack or criticize. it just does not feel right and cannot imagine that it makes you look good.

Everything in your interview should be a calculated move, every statement made with a purpose. If you choose to criticize your management, you should have a reason behind it. Perhaps your incompetent bosses drove you to the MBA program so that you can fix things that they are messing up (as an example). Criticizing for the sake of criticizing is just complaining. No one wants a complainer...everyone wants a problem solver!
