Cracked by GMAT!!

by MrCleantek » Fri Oct 01, 2010 2:32 am
Please Help
Yes guys got Dinged by GMAT today....
Gave the actual GMAT test and scored real low. May be this will cheer up some low scoring guys!

Ok, here is the break up of my score. Seat belts please. Dont fall of your chair.

Scaled Score Percentile
QA 17 5
VA 20 19
Total 350 6

I scored 350 on my actual GMAT.

So how did I get that score.

Never studied for GMAT, maybe 5 hours in total. Maybe some sections on Beat the GMAT other than that nothing. No practice papers what so ever.

SO that looks like a reasonable explanation for this.
Now, I want to retake the test by Dec 2nd Week, 2010. When I get my good score will I be able to apply for 2011 year?
Will I be able to apply in Round 3 and 4 or Round 2 is still possible?
Please advice
I will work hard and score by best in my next attempt.
I will have my revenge!

I know we are supposed to be supportive on here but there is no excuse in getting a score that low. Even the biggest slackers I know atleast flipped through a GMAT prep book a week before. Unless you are an uber-genious, you should never underestimate standardized tests especially for competitive degrees such as an MBA.

You basically spent $250 to take a diagnostic test. Also, if you want to get into a decent program, you should really apply in rounds 1 and 2. Dec is pushing it. You will really need to work your butt off (some people are a natural at this test... but getting 350 without studying too much indicates that you really need to some hard work). I've known people who scored above 600 without picking up a prep book.

My first practice test, I scored a 490.. and topped out at 580 after 2 months of studying.. but thats just me. You gotta work harder.

Not really... I also said that it would not be good to apply in the 3rd and 4th rounds... unless you saved a bunch of kids through a non profit, earned a 4.1/4.0 GPA and got a Nobel PEace prize in the past 2 years (I'm exaggerating but you get the message... its gets REALLY competitive in the final rounds). Which means I kinda answered your questions.. yes you can apply for 2011, but 3rd and 4th rounds would be hard.

Good luck in your studies.

Hey Man! I know you said that. I read some posts and found out that its not wise to apply in 3rd and 4th rounds. :)
I guess I am up for 2011 only.

Anyway let me first get the perfect score for me and later think of applying.

Also I didnt rescue any kids and definitly cant get a Nobel Prize with that initial score of 350!!

Thanks again man....

Hi Halemani!

There are some ways in which you can increase your chances of a higher score. Please do the following:

Step 1: Quant Analysis

Go through each of the GMAT Prep tests you have taken and note down what category each incorrect question fell into. Something like:

Quant - PS: 20 incorrect
Quant - DS: 10 incorrect
Quant - Arithmetic: 4 incorrect
Quant - Algebra: 2 incorrect
....

Step 2: Verbal Analysis

Go through each of the GMAT Prep tests you have taken and note down what category each incorrect verbal question fell into. Something like:

Verbal - SC: 20 incorrect
Verbal - CR: 10 incorrect
Verbal - RC: 5 incorrect
Verbal - SC - Parallel Construction: 4 incorrect
Verbal - SC - Modifiers: 3 incorrect
....

Step 3: Identify 3 categories

Find the 3 top 'lowest hanging fruit', categories which you consistently perform badly on.

Step 4: One week plan

For the next 7 days, practice those questions and learn the theory for the top 3 categories you identified in step 3.

Try the above steps. You will most likely see a 20-30 point increase due to this. We can then repeat the above steps for the other categories.

Good luck, keep working hard, practice is the key.

Thanks,

Here is a break up of my score,

Maths Section Wise

AR W9 C15
AL W5 C3
GEO W4 C1
Total 18 19

Verbal Section Wise
SC W7 C10
CR W7 C4
RC W5 C8
Total 19 22

I dont know how to break up the score even more!
Guess I have to study harder now.
Also I made continuous mistakes in QA from question 4-10 and in VA from question 7-12. 6 questions in a row!!!

You can do it! Hang in there - putting in the effort will yield the results!

When I started, it was really tough for me to even grasp math concepts, after lack of practice. Now, I'm able to solve most problems in 3.5 minutes and determined to get that time down to 2.5 minutes per question.

Practice makes perfect - this isn't a rocket science of an exam - you can do it. Stay positive. Have an outlet to share your stories and motivate yourself. For me, it was starting a blog. For you, it could be updating us on this community ;)

Hi All,
Started my 60 day plan on GMAT prep.
It started on Oct 15th.
Now this plan says to refer Kaplan's GMAT 2010-2011 Premier
But I already have a lot of stuff on GMAT like PDFs and OG and other math prep books. I dont have that book.

Can I do good without it?! Is it really necessary?
