CR probs(1000 CR)

1) Either Perry’s faction or Tucker’s faction, but not both, will win control of the government. If Perry’s faction wins, the nation will suffer economically. If Tucker’s faction wins, the nation will suffer militarily.
Given the statements in the passage, which one of the following statements must be true?
(A) It is possible, but not certain, that the nation will neither suffer economically nor suffer militarily.
(B) If the nation suffers economically, it is certain that Perry’s faction has won control of the government.
(C) It is certain that the nation will suffer either economically or militarily, and also certain that it will not suffer both.
(D) If the nation suffers militarily, it is possible, but not certain, that Tucker’s faction has won control of the government.
(E) If the nation suffers both economically and militarily, it is certain that neither Perry’s faction nor Tucker’s has won control of the government.

I am not able to judge the scope of the problem

2 ) Why not D why only A

Those who participate in local politics include people who are genuinely interested in public service and people who are selfish opportunists. Everyone who participates in local politics has an influence on the community’s values.
If the statements above are true, which one of the following must also be true?
(A) Some selfish opportunists have an influence on the community’s values.
(B) Some persons who are interested in public service do not have an influence on the community’s values.
(C) All those who have an influence on the community’s values participate in local politics.
(D) Some of those who influence the community’s values neither are interested in public service nor are selfish opportunists.
(E) All those who have an influence on the community’s values are either interested in public service or are selfish opportunists.

3)Police statistics have shown that automobile antitheft devices reduce the risk of car theft, but a statistical study of automobile theft by the automobile insurance industry claims that cars equipped with antitheft devices are, paradoxically, more likely to be stolen than cars that are not so equipped.
Which one of the following, if true, does the most to resolve the apparent paradox?
(A) Owners of stolen cars almost invariably report the theft immediately to the police but tend to delay notifying their insurance company, in the hope that the vehicle will be recovered.
(B) Most cars that are stolen are not equipped with antitheft devices, and most cars that are equipped with antitheft devices are not stolen.
(C) The most common automobile antitheft devices are audible alarms, which typically produce ten false alarms for every actual attempted theft.
(D) Automobile owners who have particularly theft-prone cars and live in areas of greatest incidence of car theft are those who are most likely to have antitheft devices installed.
(E) Most automobile thefts are the work of professional thieves against whose efforts antitheft devices offer scant protection.

Vote for D.

If a then b. If c then d. If b, then it might be a.

A - out of scope
B - cannot conclude
C - If Perry's faction wins, then all we know is the nation will suffer
economically. We don't know if it will suffer militarily. Cannot assume.
E - We already know either of Perry's or Tucker's faction will win.

D cannot be concluded. If local politics participation is ONLY from
public service folks and selfish opportunists, then D falls apart. The
question stem doesn't indicate if these are the only 2 groups. It can
or need not be true.

Split between C and D. The answer should resolve 2 things here -- why
the anti-theft device installed cars are prime candidates for theft AND
why other cars are not equally stolen.

C - if audible alarms are ignored by people, then thieves can target cars
with these devices.

D - If the owners who belong to the theft-risky areas install these
devices, it can explain why these cars are stolen. It doesn't explain
why other cars in these theft-risky areas are not stolen.

Based on above, I'll go with C. Not sure though.

Conflicted on Question 1 -- A or D??

Either Perry wins or Tucker wins but not both.
> If Perry wins, then Tucker doesn't win
> If Tucker wins, then Perry doesn't win

If Perry wins, nation's economy suffers
If Tucker wins, nation's military suffers

We know what happens if Perry or Tucker wins, but do we know what happens if they both don't win? In my opinion, we don't. Therefore, this question doesn't seem complete to me, because I think I can argue that both A and D are correct.

(A) Possible, not certain, that nation neither suffers economically or militarily
If neither one wins, and some third party faction wins, then it is possible based on the text that neither issue will arise.

(D) This is almost wrong. It attempts to go from necessary condition to sufficient condition.
If Nation Suffers militarily, then Tucker won (this would be wrong).
but instead (D) states: If Nation Suffers militarily, then possibly, Tucker won

I guess if we assume that both factions are the only parties in the race to win control of the government, then (A) would be WRONG and (D) would be CORRECT.

Anybody care to share exactly why either A or D, but not both, is correct?
my post helped --> thank me!
don't thank me --> my post = what the..??

The best thing about the correct answer choice in GMAT is it must 100% correct. We can see that in this question very clearly.
F1: Either PF or TF will win, NOT BOTH.
F2: If PF wins, nation suffers economically.
F3: If TF wins, nation suffers militarily.

(A) It is possible, but not certain, that the nation will neither suffer economically nor suffer militarily. Suffering economically is possible if PF wins, and militarily is possible if TF wins. As either of the two will defnitely gain control of government so avoiding bith sufferings is not possible. Reject.
(B) If the nation suffers economically, it is certain that Perry's faction has won control of the government. Although PF causes economical suffering, PF cannot be the only cause of economic suffering. We cant be sure in the reverse order.
(C) It is certain that the nation will suffer either economically or militarily, and also certain that it will not suffer both. First part being correct, later part is definitely not certain by the premises. Its a contradiction if the first part. Two things being true at the same time.
(D) If the nation suffers militarily, it is possible, but not certain, that Tucker's faction has won control of the government. Correct. It is possible as TF causes military suffering, but it might not be the only cause of a military suffering. Hence this choice is 100% correct in all cases.
(E) If the nation suffers both economically and militarily, it is certain that neither Perry's faction nor Tucker's has won control of the government. Extra information which is not conveyed anywhere in the premises.

Hence IMO - D

If the statements above are true, which one of the following must also be true?
(A) Some selfish opportunists have an influence on the communitys values.
(B) Some persons who are interested in public service do not have an influence on the communitys values.
(C) All those who have an influence on the communitys values participate in local politics.
(D) Some of those who influence the communitys values neither are interested in public service nor are selfish opportunists.
(E) All those who have an influence on the communitys values are either interested in public service or are selfish opportunists.
F1: Participants of local politics are divided in ONLY two groups.
F2. ALL participants of local politics have influence on community's values.

(A) Some selfish opportunists have an influence on the community's values. We should think in this way when solving this type of question. Can we negate this answer choice by finding a case when it is not true, deriving information from premises? Just like certain data sufficiency questions. Can't find a case in this option to negate it. Hence it is correct.
(B) Some persons who are interested in public service do not have an influence on the community's values. F2 clearly says ALL participants have influence, hence reject.
(C) All those who have an influence on the community's values participate in local politics. While in premises it is stated that all participants have influence on community it is not stated if reverse is true. If X causes Y it is not sure that Y causes X.
(D) Some of those who influence the community's values neither are interested in public service nor are selfish opportunists. Why not D? It's a good confusion. Only and very simple point of rejection will be because its an assumption, it brings extra objects into consideration which are out of discussion. We never talked about people apart from politics who have influence on community anywhere in the premises.
(E) All those who have an influence on the community's values are either interested in public service or are selfish opportunists. Its kinda vice versa to answer choice B. If you can understand why to eliminate B you can eliminate this too.

I will go with A

Two contradicting facts:
F1: Police stats show antitheft devices reduce car stealing risk.
F2. Automobile industry stats show cars with antitheft more likely to be stolen.

Always prephrase in resolve questions, even if it doesn't help directly it will help in sorting thoughts.
Prephrase: Cars on which these facts were found were different for automobile industry and different for police, which may explain inconsistency.

(A) Owners of stolen cars almost invariably report the theft immediately to the police but tend to delay notifying their insurance company, in the hope that the vehicle will be recovered. So? what should i do? Irrelevant right?
(B) Most cars that are stolen are not equipped with antitheft devices, and most cars that are equipped with antitheft devices are not stolen. This restates F1, does not provide the reason for inconsistency.
(C) The most common automobile antitheft devices are audible alarms, which typically produce ten false alarms for every actual attempted theft. Though it may mention why anti theft devices are ineffective it does not provide the reason which would resolve the paradox i.e. prove that even police facts are right and so are automobile industry's. It doesn't explain why according to automobile industry these audible alarms will cause more thefts and more likability to theft and also it doesn't explain how it will reduce theft according to police.
(D) Automobile owners who have particularly theft-prone cars and live in areas of greatest incidence of car theft are those who are most likely to have antitheft devices installed. Nice, now there might be costlier cars who are more prone to stolen, or their might be some areas more prone to car theft, so their owners install anti theft devices in them. While there might be cars and areas less prone to stealing and hence owners do not get antitheft installed. This explains the inconsistency. Even if antitheft devices reduce stealing chances (as stated by police) they still might be located in areas with more theft or may be costlier cars which attract more thieves, thus increasing their chance of getting stolen (as stated by automobile industry 'more likely to be stolen')
(E) Most automobile thefts are the work of professional thieves against whose efforts antitheft devices offer scant protection. Does not give explanation for inconsistency rather restates F2 in a way.

IMO - D
