Cornell Accelerated MBA program

by futureMBA » Thu Apr 16, 2009 11:07 am
Hi,

How good is the Cornell's Accelerated (1-Year) program? How does it compare to the 2-Year program? I could not find any employment statistics for the 1-year program students.

Thanks

Dear FutureMBA,

Thanks for your post!

The 1-year program at Cornell is well regarded. In fact, the students who gain admission are usually quite accomplished and have pretty impressive numbers, etc.

As to your question about the employment stats, I suspect you are having trouble finding them because Cornell/Johnson may not break out these figures - since AMBA students at Cornell become a part of the 'second year' class as of September. Therefore, their employment stats may be intermingled with the second year students.

Here is an excerpt from the Clear Admit School Guide to Cornell/Johnson that discusses the AMBA program a bit further:

The Accelerated MBA
The Accelerated MBA Program offers students with an advanced degree in science, engineering or another quantitative field to earn a Johnson MBA in just 12 months. Unlike many MBA programs, Johnson’s Accelerated MBA does not serve career changers, but is instead intended for students planning to move to the business side of their technical or scientific field. Some students who plan to return to their previous employer in a more strategic role are able to have their company sponsor their degree.

Accelerated MBA classes begin in late May and are held on Cornell’s main campus. Classes run Monday through Friday for the first ten weeks, providing intense training in the core business areas of finance, marketing, management, economics and strategy. In the fall and spring semesters that follow, the Accelerated MBA experience is similar to that of second-year students in the regular MBA program. The students choose from the electives offered by the Johnson School and Cornell University, and craft a specialized curriculum tailored to their career goals. With an average age of approximately 31 years, Accelerated MBA students tend to be several years older than their two-year counterparts, and have a year or so more work experience. In addition, the median GMAT score of the Accelerated MBA class tends to be about 30 points above that of the two-year MBA class.
