Consider this while posting a new question

by niksworth » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:45 am
This is addressed to all users of BTG.

In order to make the discussions in this community richer, consider the following whenever you are posting a new question -

1. Please underline the part of the sentence in question in SC -
I have observed that quite often posters do not underline the required part. This requires an additional effort on the part of other members to figure out the incorrect part of the sentence from the answer choices and creates unnecessary confusion.

2. Please provide the OA -
Either you can provide OA in the original post itself or after some discussion. However, I have often seen that original posters completely forget about providing the OA even after an appreciable discussion has taken place. The same phenomenon is rampant in RC section as well. This totally defeats the purpose. Fellow members take pains to point out the different flaws in the sentence. It is imperative that such discussions see a logical conclusion which is impossible without the actual OA.

3. Please provide the source of the question -
Mentioning the source is critically important to ensure that members do not waste their precious time on questions which have suspect / non standard origins.

4. Please post your doubts in the original post -
If you have a specific doubt in a question, then please explicitly mention that doubt so that fellow members can focus on it.
This is already being followed by few members. I have seen that this approach provides a much better discussion and has more takeaways. If, on the other hand, you want to just share a good question with the community, then posting the question only is quite okay.

Other suggestions are welcome.

Please cite your reference used in explanations. I think it is important to give credit to those that have provided great explanations, and also the same reason #3 is suggested above would be true for citing reference in explanations.
Yep.

excellent and welcome back niksworth!

You can as well ask people just not to write IMO answer choice or +1 vote for Answer choice. I have love for democracy but it won't help to improve GMAT score :).

Whoever does answers this way , wastes one's time.

Except for point 2 I agree for the rest. Please version out your draft rule with a new release having no point 2.
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

Whats wrong with point 2? it is very much required. They are many abandoned threads lying in SC/CR.After so much effort we dont get the OA, the whole purpose is defeated.

Kudos for the rules.Hope everyone adheres to those.

No, I still advocate the one who just write IMO answer choice or +1 vote for answer choice because sometimes I can refer to them like the vote for the correct choice in debatable question until the OA appear.

When I come here to help people, I am definitely more attracted to posts with #4. I like answering specific questions!

Great tips! I wish more people would consider these when posting their questions here :)

Instead of browsing the forum, I opt to follow the experts since I'll be certain to receive an answer and detail explanation by the end when I am done with the question

OA is always marked with SPOILER .. I guess it spoils the play... this the premise I offer for my conclusion.
