confusion on with(expert reply)

by arghya05 » Wed Aug 31, 2011 10:44 pm
* also, the way the gmat uses 'with ...', it must be followed by a noun or noun equivalent. so, for instance, you could say 'with her 15 recordings', but you can't say 'with her 15 recordings disappointing...' (which is no longer a noun phrase).

with introduces a noun or noun phrase

mr dos was a good man, with good ethics---------------perfect
mr dos was a good man, with good ethics making him strong-------bad
please explain the concept

I am not an expert but I will try to explain based on the text you have posted.

It says with can only introduce a noun or noun phrase.

In the 2 sentences you have given, "with good ethics making him strong" is not a noun phrase. Good ethics makes him strong. It has a verb in it.
According to the text, with introduces nouns or noun phrases. things like books, the three books, the white van, good ethics, me, you etc.
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)
