clean criminal record

That every worker has a clean criminal record is of some importance to investment banks which is why a stringent background check is a necessary prerequisite for all of their job applicants.

I would say C as well

A- Beginning a sentence with "that" is awkward. I have never seen it done before, so I don't know if its unidiomatic or not

B- A stringent background check "are" is incorrect

C- Correct

D- It is of some importance changes the meaning and certainty level

E- "is because" is always wrong on the GMAT

AS far as I can see, we can safely choose between A and C.
I go with C as A seems more ambiguous. "of some importance" - is really awkward. "which" also seems to modify investment banks instead of how important it is. That makes sentence really ambiguous and awkward.

In C I dont like their employees and they consider in one clause.... a little bit awkward too. However consider it important is a right idiom. employees>HAVE ...record - is correct. Also beginning clause modifies investment banks correctly. Require each to undergo is a right idiom.

What is the OA?

Awkward. "is important" would be more concise.

b)Clean criminal records of their employees is important to investment banks; hence, a stringent background check are necessary prerequisites for employment
Subject - verb agreement error

C) Because they consider it important that all of their employees have a clean criminal record, investment banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check

d)It is of some importance that all investment banks' workers have clean criminal records which is why many of them undergo stringent background checks
Awkward.

I choose C as well but had a doubt on the usage of 'they' but below explanation by Manhattan staff cleared it convincingly.

"they" refers to "investment banks".

this is an acceptable construction - pronoun coming before antecedent, when the pronoun is in an initial modifier and the antecedent is in the main clause.
this is NOT acceptable if the pronoun is in the main clause and the antecedent is in a modifier that follows.

examples:
Although he had studied for hours, Thom failed the test --> acceptable
He failed the test, although Thom had studied for hours --> incorrect

A seems to have poor sentence formation where as C gives the intended meaning with good usage of words.

For example employee is better word than worker.

SO C seems a better fit than A

IMHO, Real tough one....C doesn't convince me with its meaning...

I think the battle comes down to A and C and A loses because of "which is why" and i think C loses because it says "banks require each job applicant to undergo a stringent background check". This suggests that a stringent background check is like a medical test that employees go through as a rigmarole.

IMHO, background check is either a self-initiated exercise (sometimes without the knowledge of the employee in Q) or through references supplied by the employee. C makes the check sound like a routine test....A maintains the meaning but has a "which" error.....I will still choose A and regard the Q as sub-standard.....

Source please???

komal,

could you explain in detail why have you highlighted which is why in A and D ?

Suprisingly no one raised an issue for 'it' in C

to find what 'it' refers to in C, click on the link below for stacey's explanation :)
