EMBA at Columbia or NYU PT

by monad2000 » Tue Aug 09, 2011 8:05 pm
I have big question for you. I have currently owned my own marketing company for 5 year and would like to change careers to finance or consulting. I know that a full time program would be best but I don't want to wait a year and I was accepted to NYU PT and Columbia EMBA. If I'm looking to get a job in finance or consulting and have the time to take on a non-paid or paid internship anytime which one would be the best fit?

Columbia is higher ranked, and more prestigious, although NYU, thanks to their great connections also do a great job of getting you hooked up with the finance world. IF I were you I wouldn't decide without taking a visit to NYC and meeting up with alumni/students. Ultimately, your feeling about which one is better for you will be just as good if not a better indication than ranking.

I recommend attending info sessions along with visiting career services for both schools. The concern about Columbia would be that you would not have access to the types of recruiters who are looking to hire associate level consulting or the equivalent-level finance positions. So, be frank with Career Services at both NYU part-time and Columbia EMBA.

NYU Stern does not allow part-time students to participate in the full-time MBA on campus recruiting process. Here is the part-time MBA Career page (https://www.stern.nyu.edu/AcademicProgra ... /index.htm). So, I would contact the consulting and finance clubs and ask to speak to current students to see how difficult networking is as a part-time student.

Columbia EMBA students can access Columbia's job posting database. I would ask to see those jobs and determine if those jobs meet your short-term post-MBA roles. Here is their EMBA Career page (https://www4.gsb.columbia.edu/emba/overview/career). Likewise, speak to EMBA students in the respective clubs as you conduct further due diligence on the two programs.

Best of luck,
