Of all the players in a professonal baseball league, 1/2 are foreign-born,inclding 1/3 of the pitchers. If 3/4 of the players are pitchers, what percentage of the players who are not pitchers are foreign-born?

A) 100%
B) 75%
C) 66 2/3%
D) 50%
E) 25%

I was somehow not convinced with the solution provided by Author in my preparation book . Experts pls provide your inputs. Thanks !! Raju

IOM c
assign LCM for denoms in portions, 12
assign numbers for each subset: Foreign=12*1/2, Pitchers=12*3/4, Not Pitchers=12*1/4, Foreign&Pitchers=12*1/3
find (Only Foreign)/Not Pitchers, (12*1/2 - 12*1/3) : (12*1/4) =2/3 or 66 2/3 (%)

I tried to solve in some other way.
Is this approach correct.

Assuming total to be 120(divisible by all the fractions given in the que)
pitchers non pitchers total
foreign born 40 20 60
non foreign born 50 10 60
total 90 30 120

change/original=p/100
30-10/30*100=p
20/30*100=p
therefore p=66.3%

The Answer is 100% as per book :(.

1/2,1/3 and 3/4 , so compatabile number considered was 240.

If there are 240 player total, then there are 1/2*240 = 120 foreign born players and 240-120 = 120 native born players. There are 3/4*240=180 pitchers abd 240-180=60 non-pitchers. Of the pitchers 1/3*130 = 60 are foreign born, leaving 180-60 = 120 native born pitchers. Of the 120 foreign born players, 60 are pitchers, leaving 120-6- = 60 foreign born non-pitchers. So of the 60 non-pitchers, 60 are foreign-born. thats 100%

Foreign Native Total
pitcher 60 120 180
non pit 60 0 60
Total 120 120 240

This is an EITHER/OR problem.
Every player is EITHER a pitcher OR a non-pitcher.
Every player is EITHER foreign-born OR not.
Use a GROUP GRID (also known as a matrix) to organize the data:

_______________P__________NP___________Total

F:

NF:

Total:

In the group grid, every row has to add up to the total, as does every column.
Looking at the top row, foreign-born pitchers + foreign-born non-pitchers = total foreign born.
Looking at the left-most column, foreign-born pitchers + non-foreign-born pitchers = total pitchers.

Now let's fill in the data step by step. Whenever we have 2 entries in a row or column, we can determine the remaining entry, since everything has to add up horizontally and vertically. For the total number of players, let's plug in 12 (the LCM of 2, 3 and 4, the denominators in the problem):

_______________P__________NP____________Total

F:

NF:

Total:_____________________________________12

1/2 are foreign-born, 3/4 are pitchers:

________________P__________NP____________Total

F:__________________________________________6

NF:_________________________________________6

Total:____________9__________3______________12

1/3 of the 9 pitchers are foreign-born:

_________________P__________NP___________Total

F:_______________3___________3______________6

NF:______________6___________0______________6

Total:____________9___________3_____________12

Notice that everything adds up horizontally and vertically.

Foreign-born NP/Total NP = 3/3 = 100%.

The correct answer is A.

i made mistake by assessing 1/3 of pitchers from 12 and not from pitchers, 9
the answer is 100%

correct answer must be 100%
assign LCM for denoms in portions, 12
assign numbers for each subset: Foreign=12*1/2, Pitchers=12*3/4, Not Pitchers=12*1/4, Foreign&Pitchers=12*1/3 must be 12*(3/4)*(1/3)
find (Only Foreign)/Not Pitchers, (12*1/2 - 12*(3/4)*(1/3) : (12*1/4) =3/3 or 100 (%)
