The ancient Romans piped hot water through the walls and under the floors so as to warm up the rooms.
A. so as to warm up the rooms
B. and so would be able to warm up the rooms
C. to warm the rooms up
D. so that they could warm up the rooms
E. in order that they would warm up the rooms

1. So as to never correct on gmat....
2 and 5 are wordy...
3 to warm the rooms up is not idiomatic..

4 shud be the answer... i dont like this option either...
but then.... better choice from the lot ;)

I think in ur example..
its - so X as to Y

the one that is in choice 1 say - so as to X

raunekk,

in the example you selected, the correct idiom is being used:
So X as to be Y

however, in the original sentence you posted, "so as to" is not being used as an idiom and hence is incorrect. hope this helps.

Guys this is similar to a question in OG11. SC #36.

According to OG11, SO as to X is not idiomatically correct. and in D the relationship is absolutely clear.

the correct idiom is so [adjective] as to [verb]
'be' is a form of verb only.

Is the usage of "they" correct here ?

Can't "they" refer to romans or pipes in the sentence ? so there is an issue with the antecedent.
