In an effort improve the quality of patient care, Dr. Lydia Temoscho is directing one of several clinical research projects that seek to determine the extent that psychological counseling helps to supplement the medical treatment of serious disease.
(A) seek to determine the extent that psychological counseling helps to supplement
(B) seek to determine how helpful psychological counseling is in supplementing
(C) seeks to determine how helpful psychological counseling is to supplement
(D) seeks to determine to what extent psychological counseling is a help in supplementing
(E) seeks to determine the extent that psychological counseling is helpful in supplementing
OA:B
What is the subject? Is the subject Singular or Plural? Seeks is singular or Plural?

I'm so confused with these kinds of words like cost-costs, seek-seeks, keep-keeps.

Please share any trick or a rule that can remove this confusions.

By searching on this site, I luckily got the explanation of this questions.

seek - plural.
seeks - singular.

that seeks/seek?

what is that? "that" should refer immediate noun. In this case that is referring to "projects" which is plural.

CDE are out.

...the extent that...

here "that" is referring to extent....a word "extent" can't help. So A is Incorrect.

B is the best.

logic of meaning permit only 2 cases

THE ONLY ONE of nouns that IS (only means no second), both "the" and "only" is required

(just, but, only) ONE of nouns that ARE (only means just, but, ). "one" is preceded by "only", "just","but", or not

A and B are left

no need of "extent", A is wordy

Dr. Lydia Temoscho is directing one of several clinical research projects that seek/seeks ??

that is referring to project which is plural subject. Therefore B is the right answer.

as I said before, the logic of meaning permit only 2 cases

THE ONLY ONE OF THINGS THAT IS

in this case, "is" must refer to "the only one", logic of meaning decide this

(ONLY, JUST,BUT" ONE OF THINGS THAT ARE

in this case, "are" must refer to "things", logic of meaning decide this

pls, read the book "Greg reference manual, by Sabin" which can be downloaded from englishtips.org, for this matter

Here there are two Rules
1:"That" is an essential modifier
2: "only" is not th
ere before "one"

So (B) is the answer
