can some expert plz explain the following doubt abt this question : there is a rule in sc manhattan that complex gerund can be parallel to only complex gerund or action noun and also complex gerund can never be parralel to simple gerund and to comcrete nouns .
but as per this question " the melting of polar icecaps " is (as per me ) a complex gerund phrase .where as "heat waves ' is a concrete noun .also "flooding in low lying and costal area " is a simple gerund phrase .so isint this sentence flouting the parallelism or am i missing some thing ?

can someone help me with this line of thought:
The answer options involve checking for parallelism. Specifically we are looking for Noun Phrases such as heat waves, flooding, melting, increase as the signs of global warming.
In options A, C increasing acts as a verb. hence we can rule them out. E is wordier and awkward.
In B increasing is an adjective that modifies temperatures. hence it shud be ruled out.
So what is left is D.

Reopening this thread:

Pls help:
1) why
A/B/C
are wrong and why D is correct
2) how do we know that INCREASING is used as verb in A/B/C, but INCREASES is not

1) Simple Gerund and complex gerund does not occur in the same sentence.
Increasing Temperature -> Simple Gerund
Increasing of XXXX -> Complex Gerund
The increasing of -> Clearly conveys that "ing" form is a noun.

Using the above rules work when addressing the parallelism type questions.

A: increasing the temperature of the oceans, and melting (Complex & Simple - Incorrect)
B: increasing temperatures of the oceans, and melting (Complex & Simple - Incorrect)
C: increasing the temperature of the oceans, and the melting of (Complex & Simple - Incorrect)
D: increases in ocean temperature, and the melting of (Correct: Increasing...of is changed to Increases in. Melting is changed to "the melting". This implies that all the nouns are now parallel)
E: increases in the temperature of the oceans, and melting among (Melting among is incorrect)

D is the correct choice.

how can "D " BE right here the non underlined portion has a simple gerund "flooding in low-lying and coastal areas" and the underlined portion os option "d" has complex gerund " the melting of ..."
