2 quick questions for experts

by tttrn333 » Sun Nov 20, 2011 4:40 am
1) GMAT reporting:

I already submitted my official score to the school. My question is do I have to report all of my scores on the application. Some school has multiple slots. Do you have to use all of them? Or do I just put the best score and latest score. I took the test twice. My best score happens to be my best. Can I just put that and not the other?

2) Leadership Essays:

Specifically for Northwestern. I am black and from inner city. Can I use my experience growing given my background as a leadership experience. More specifically, I used my experience growing up poor and black to describe the traits I learned and then showed how that traits was used in 1 leadership example.

I know that most expert blogs / guides says to do two examples. Can my background be 1 experience and my actual leadership experience be the other experience?

Thanks.

Hello sir!
To answer your questions:

1. Most schools ask you to report all scores. If they don't you can report only the highest.
2. Well, maybe. "Growing up" and "Succeeding" is great, esp. in face of adversity, but it doesn't mean it's a leadership story unless you have leadership. If for example you helped others do the same, that would be one heckuva leadership story!

1. Irrespective of what you write in the application form, adcom is going to take your highest score. Moreover, adcom is anyways going to see the test score from last 5 years. Taking it twice and showing an improvement, well, you can't go wrong by putting both the scores.

2. What you describe can be a great start but yes, you will need to translate into a real leadership experience. You might be having some great stories with you but keep in mind that the most common place where applicants go wrong in essays is by NOT answering the essay questions.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.

I do have the an actual leadership story. This is specifically for the Northwestern essay. From the blogs, experts are suggesting to provide 2 examples. My question is can I just use one but develop it more?, including discussing my background.

My background is important in my development as a leader and is connected to my actual example. I'm just wondering it is better to just focus on 2 actual example (actual leadership part) rather than draw out and develop one example (that in itself might be long-winded).
