169. Because the enemy’s new ship is the quietest and it is therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed by the military as a threat to security.

(A) and it is therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed
(B) it is therefore the most elusive of submarines, and it has increased the view
(C) and therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed
(D) and therefore it is the most elusive of submarines, there is an increasing view
(E) therefore being the most elusive of submarines, it is increasingly viewed

Official ans is C

But is'nt the usage of 'being' prohibited in GMAT? or is this an exception?

please clarify experts!

Don't know anything about 'being' being (ha!) a no-no on the test, dude. It does make sense that you were warned away from constructions with being + past tense though, because this is a very passive way to write, which makes it tricky to read and write correctly, and often not concise.

Once again (i say this over and over), it's about picking the best answer, and that's C.

Danielle,

Below is my analysis (I chose C), just wanted to be sure that my analysis is correct:
(A) and it is therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed...Negated this becoz it cannot be used for submarine. We have a case of possessiveness here (enemy's new ship) and "it" cannot be referred to "enemy's new ship"
(B) it is therefore the most elusive of submarines, and it has increased the view...same as A
(C) and therefore the most elusive submarine, it is being increasingly viewed..clear and precise..it is referring to submarine (which is singular)
(D) and therefore it is the most elusive of submarines, there is an increasing view...same as A
(E) therefore being the most elusive of submarines, it is increasingly viewed..it cannot be used because "submarines" is plural...

hence by POE...C

Please advise

Not the way that I analyzed it, but you caught the points of error in each wrong answer choice, and used POE to choose the right answer. Nothing you wrote looks untrue, so it's great.

@jan08:

Can you please explain why you have eliminated option "E"? As per your post IT is being refered to the SUBMARINES, in fact it is actually refering to the SHIP, similar to the word "IT" in option "C". Can you explain this?
