Hi,

Can you please provide the explaination of the answer for the questions mentioned below:

let me give a try... u guys can correct me if I am wrong

1. A controversial figure throughout most of his public life, the Black leader Marcus Garvey advocated that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom.
(A) that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom
(B) that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him
(C) that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him
(D) some Black's returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom
(E) some Black's return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa

IMO A

Advocated - subjunctive mood.. so we need that. D & E are eliminated.

C - awkward and doesn't have comma before which
B - I believe land is redundant. Instead of African land, we could just say Africa

2. A huge flying reptile that died out with the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago, the Quetzalcoatlus had a wingspan of 36 feet, believed to be the largest flying creature the world has ever seen.
(A) believed to be
(B) and that is believed to be
(C) and it is believed to have been
(D) which was, it is believed,
(E) which is believed to be

IMO B

A - X, ed form.... so here believed modifies 36 feet (closest noun) which makes no sense
C usage of have been - (present progressive ) - wrong tense as the reptile has already died.
D which modifies 36 feet
E) same as D

3. A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published, reveals that Twain provided financial assistance to one of the first Black students at Yale Law School.
(A) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published,
(B) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year of publication as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,
(C) A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published,
(D) Mark Twain wrote a letter in the same year as he published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that
(E) Mark Twain wrote a letter in the same year of publication as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that

IMO B

A - subject-verb agreement - Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - singular so singular vern was is required
C - same year that - wrong idiom
D - that refers to Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
E - It should be 'same year as the publication of'

(A) that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom
(B) that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him
(C) that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him
(D) some Black's returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom

(E) some Black's return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa

The issues:

1. GMAT never uses "which" without COMMA.
--> This kills C and D.
2. Some black's is wrong because it should be "some blacks' "--This kills D and E.
3. Restrictive modifier used in the option B changes the meaning of the sentence.

Answer is A.

2. A huge flying reptile that died out with the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago, the Quetzalcoatlus had a wingspan of 36 feet, believed to be the largest flying creature the world has ever seen.
(A) believed to be
(B) and that is believed to be
(C) and it is believed to have been
(D) which was, it is believed,
(E) which is believed to be

The issues:

1. Believed to be when used after the noun acts like a non-essential modifier.

Example:

I know the boy, believed to be the best, who has won the prize.---> "believed to be the best" modifies the boy.

==> in the same way, "36 feet" has been modified by "believed to be" in the option A. A is out.

2. Which modifies "36 feet" in the options D and E. It means that 36 feetis the largest flying ... So, D and E are out.

3. That in the option B is NOT correct because "that" can be used as relative pronoun and can be used as restrictive modifier. None of these uses has been in option B. B is out.

Answer is C

The issues:

1. "Year of celebration"--means a specific year at which the celebration was done.

--> ''The year of publication"--Means there is a particular year of publication. The intended meaning of the sentence is not to say there is a particular year of publication.
==> This kills B and E.

2. As he published--in the option D is changing the meaning because it seems that Mark Twain himself published the book. Actually the publisher has published the book. Mark Twain has written the book. D is out.

3. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn ---is the name of a book. So, the verb should be singular. A is out.

Answer is C.
