While depressed

by ektamatta » Fri May 30, 2008 9:46 am
While depressed property values can hurt some large investors, they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose equity —in many cases representing a life's savings—can plunge or even disappear.
(A) they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose
(B) they can potentially devastate homeowners in that their
(C) for homeowners they are potentially devastating, because their
(D) for homeowners, it is potentially devastating in that their
(E) it can potentially devastate homeowners, whose

OA is A

I answered E

In A, i believe 'they' is confusing since they can referr to large investors too. and hence i opted for 'it'.

Also the verb matches with the part which is not underlined...

can someone throw more light on this pls....

Thanks

Do keep in mind that you have to look for the BEST answer among the choices given... And A is the best

Property values (plural) need plural pronoun..

D and E are using "it" so ruled out...

In C, "they" and "their" are not clear whom they are referring to..

B is awkwardly framed sentence...

so A...

I would add that in A, the verbs *are* parallel in that they are both in the same tense.

(A) they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose
(B) they can potentially devastate homeowners in that their ----> remember this rule that the usage of "in that" is wrong in GMAT
(C) for homeowners they are potentially devastating, because their ----> ambiguous "they"
(D) for homeowners, it is potentially devastating in that their
(E) it can potentially devastate homeowners, whose

I thought depressed property values is singular. but now I know why not.

depression of .. values/value -> singular
depressed ... value -> singular because value is singular
depressed ... values -> plural because values is plural

Now coming back to question,
I still can't support A :( -> they can refer to investors too... :(

Looking for expert help..

-Thanks in Advance
