Schools Teaching The Case Method

by wayofjungle » Wed Jul 25, 2012 10:42 am
I'm surprised I couldn't find a pre-existing thread on this topic.

To be clear, the case method is one of my biggest reasons for pursuing an MBA. I have experience with analyzing HBS business cases during my undergraduate business studies, and am quite fond of them. Also, I think that adhering to the case method exclusively will provide me with the greatest educational value, above and beyond my undergrad schooling.

I have done some research from schools that exclusively use the case method and have found the following US schools:

Harvard Business School
The Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan
The Darden School at the University of Virginia

Did anyone have the same perspective as me who went on from an undergrad in business to an MBA?
Also, can anyone comment on additional schools that use the case method more than 50% of the time?

My sincere thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about Ross, but HBS and Darden are the schools touted as 100% case method.

I think you'll find that most, if not all, other schools also have the case method. It's just a question of the percentage. Most schools will feature a combination of cases, lectures, labs etc. It's just a matter of finding that right combination for you.

Hope that's useful.

I'm pretty sure your information about Ross is incorrect. In fact, Ross touts its experiential learning classes and opportunities (i.e. MAP) more than anything else.

Okay, thanks for the response. That information was collected from Wikipedia, which is certainly not 100% reliable.

Experiential learning classes does not sound as valuable for me.

HBS and Darden are the only top schools that are 100% case-based. I would challenge you on this sentence though, "Also, I think that adhering to the case method exclusively will provide me with the greatest educational value, above and beyond my undergrad schooling. " and urge you to look into other schools. If I were to read this sentence literally it would be inferred that going to a school like Stanford or Wharton couldn't give you the greatest educational value above your undergrad. Also, most of what's necessary for you to learn in b-school does not come from the cases.
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

INSEAD uses it a lot too, based on Harvard's curriculum (although apparently, not exclusively), and almost all schools do at least SOME case study.
