Need urgent help from experts

by gmat_guy666 » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:59 am
hello , I need some help in writing GMAT. My exam is in exactly 11 days from now . I am feeling nervous and terribly scared for some reason. My target is 650+ ( not aiming for 700 at all) .
My verbal score has been 35 constantly , but my quant score is stagnant at 40 . I am not expecting to improve a lot in quant .However,

1)I would like to know the few topics I need to concentrate on to hit the 650+ mark , also, what topic I can leave as I do not have enough time .

2) How much time to spend on IR and AWA in the remaining 10 days . I am not aware of both the sections

3) Should I devote more time on Verbal or concentrate equally on Quant and Verbal ?

Aprreciate a quick response !

Best Regards.

Q40 and V35 translates to a total score of 610 or 620. So, at the moment, you are short of your 650 target score. What has been your best score to date? I ask because I typically suggest that students achieve their target score on at least 2 practices tests before they take the official test.

It's hard to tell what you need to work on without knowing your weaknesses. With 11 days to go, your time should be spent strengthening any weaknesses you have identified. Many students have strong fundamentals, but their scores are dragged down by poor test-taking skills (time management and endurance). If that's the case for you, then you should take LOTS of practice tests.

If your weaknesses are content related, you need to focus on concepts that have the greatest return on investment (ROI). These are concepts that are tested frequently and require the least amount of time to learn. In my opinion, these concepts are:
- Sentence Correction
- Data Sufficiency strategies
- Percent
- Integer Properties
- Powers/roots
- Algebra
- Geometry

Notice that most of these are quantitative. I'm not saying that you shouldn't prepare for Verbal but for CR and RC I feel that noticeable improvements take longer, especially for non-native English speakers.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks for the insight Breant , Do you think its better to push the test dates to 20th May ? This is the best I can do under the given circumnstance ( with 8 days vacation from work in between) .

My score on two MGMAT has been 590 & 610 .. I lacked in the Math fundamentals during the two tests .and My score was 39 & 40 . However , I have done some good amount of pract. and confident to move the score to 40+ ..

But , my main question is should I consider postponing the exam ( move it to 20th May ), or just go give it a shot . I am a working professionla and the Job is going to make me terribly busy after May ..Please suggest !

You still have a few days to reschedule (you can reschedule up to 7 days before the test for a $50 fee). Since it's been a while since your last practice test, I suggest that you take 2 or 3 practice tests in the upcoming days. See where you stand.

If those tests don't go well, THEN reschedule.

Thank you ! thats a good advise . For some reason I concentrate more on spending time reviewing and not taking tests . I fear that if I score less I will be demotivated :( . I am yet to take GMAT prep tests . So , the prep test will be a good indicator of where I stand .

One last question I promise : Do you think its realistic to reach the 700 mark if I postpone the exam to 20th May ? I asking from an average ( hard working) guy perspective . GMAT is my priority more thatn work at this point .

Thanks again!

Best regards.

A 100-point increase in 4 weeks is quite significant. I've seen it before, but it's not that common.
Start taking practice tests so you can gauge your progress/trajectory.
