Hi,

I'm currently working for an IT industry and have an experience of 2 yrs. I'm from a business family background. Due to some personal reasons, I may have to quit my job and join family business. My role in business will be to take care of accounts and manage people.

Please let me know whether my experience in business will be counted by colleges.
Also, will the job switch affect my chances of getting into a good college?

Hi Hemanth,

As per our opinion, this should not affect you too much. You should address the reasons for switching over to your family business in the application, by answering the 'Extra Information' question. You should try and answer it positively, showing how a downturn in your life didn't let you go down and how you added value to your family business. For eg: you could quote figures like X% increase in revenue, Y% increase in product offerings etc.

If you are able to project it well, it wouldn't hurt your chances, but in fact the adaptability would affect you positively. Also, you wouldn't be a typical MBA candidate, as you would have had some good job experience and then moved into a business. Also, since most Indian applicants are computer engineers/IT guys, this shift would break that mold when it comes to you.

A lot would depend on your GMAT scores, overall profile, extra currics, job delegations etc. But in response to what you asked, the above pretty much sums it up.

Schools like INSEAD and IMD specialize in family business based MBA courses and are definitely worth checking out.
