Hi,

Anyone out there who can express his/her experience with MGMAT(Manhattan GMAT) CR questions, in free CAT. I felt the answer choices very ambiguous in some of them. For ex.

1. The number of new cases of tuberculosis diagnosed in Country X increased dramatically this year. The country's news media have speculated that the sharp increase in new cases is the result of the tuberculosis outbreak that occurred in neighboring Country Y last year. Health officials in Country X have therefore proposed that all visitors from Country Y must submit to a medical examination before entering Country X.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly suggests that the proposed medical examinations will NOT help curb the spread of tuberculosis in Country X?

Country Z, which also neighbors Country Y, has not experienced an increase in cases of tuberculosis.

Current medical technology is not capable of detecting all carriers of tuberculosis.

Country X does not have the resources to examine all visitors from Country Y.

Tuberculosis is not spread through human contact.

Citizens of Country Y will not travel to Country X if the proposal is implemented.

2. Everyone who has graduated from TopNotch High School has an intelligence quotient (IQ) of over 120. Most students with an IQ of over 120 and all students with an IQ of over 150 who apply to one or more Ivy League universities are accepted by at least one of them.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following conclusions?

Every graduate of TopNotch High School with an IQ of 150 has been accepted by at least one Ivy-League university.

If a person is a high-school graduate and has an IQ of less than 100, he or she could not have been a student at TopNotch High School.

If a person has an IQ of 130 and is attending an Ivy-League university, it is possible for him or her to have graduated from TopNotch High School.

At least one graduate from TopNotch high school who has applied to at least one Ivy-League university has been accepted to one of them.

If a high-school graduate has an IQ of 150 and is not attending an Ivy-League university, then he or she did not apply to one of them.

3. Calorie restriction, a diet high in nutrients but low in calories, is known to prolong the life of rats and mice by preventing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. A six-month study of 48 moderately overweight people, who each reduced their calorie intake by at least 25 percent, demonstrated decreases in insulin levels and body temperature, with the greatest decrease observed in individuals with the greatest percentage change in their calorie intake. Low insulin level and body temperature are both considered signs of longevity, partly because an earlier study by other researchers found both traits in long-lived people.

If the above statements are true, they support which of the following inferences?

Calorie restriction produces similar results in humans as it does in rats and mice.

Humans who reduce their calorie intake by at least 25 percent on a long-term basis will live longer than they would have had they not done so.

Calorie intake is directly correlated to insulin level in moderately overweight individuals.

Individuals with low insulin levels are healthier than individuals with high insulin levels.

Some individuals in the study reduced their calorie intake by more than 25 percent.

We need to support the proposed medical examinations will NOT help curb the spread of tuberculosis in Country X

Country Z, which also neighbors Country Y, has not experienced an increase in cases of tuberculosis. - > we dont care about country Z

Current medical technology is not capable of detecting all carriers of tuberculosis.

Country X does not have the resources to examine all visitors from Country Y.->Shut up !, we have the resources. We need to find why even after examination we are bound to fail

Tuberculosis is not spread through human contact.-> BS

Citizens of Country Y will not travel to Country X if the proposal is implemented.->Oh Great, the disease will be curbed but no reason for effect of medical examinations.

Hi,
The only rational response I would give to your query regarding MGMAT CR is that stick to official sources for CR's !!! MGMAT CR's are good in the cats however rely only on official CR's for the sort of reasoning u need to excel in the GMAT.
Cheers !!

Agreed. Whether it be Kaplan, MGMAT, Gmatclub, each of them some questions that follow different patterns of reasoning. Official Guides are the best for GMAT.

I agree. Many CR Manhantan are hard beautifully. But, some are not good.

Gmatprep, I think, is a only official source of hard questions

Question 2 and 3 are clear. OA are c and e.

For question 1, A is correct. All other choices are contradicting evidence. Restate or contradict evidence are tricks very popular on gmatprep questions though not on OG books.

I dont think options B or C are not ambiguous at all... They can be eliminated with a valid reasoning.. N this reasoning is something that we need to use in official GMAT questions..

B: Current medical technology is not capable of detecting all carriers of tuberculosis
So, basically B says that medical tech. available is not sufficient for detecting all carriers of T. So, lets say there are 100 T. patients from country Y and they are supposed to go to country X. So, according to B, out of these 100 patients, may be 80 or may be even 1 would be detected using current medical technology in despite the limitations.. So, even if the technology refuses that ONE particular patient from entering the country X, the current technology has helped in curbing the spread of t in country X...

We can apply exactly same logic to eliminate option C. A and E are something that we do not require for sure.. And that leaves out D...
If T is not spread through human contacts.. that is people from country Y are not the source of disease , then there is no point in testing them and so testing them will help little to curb the T spreading in country X...
So, option D weakens the conclusion and OA is indeed D !!
