Waitlist Etiquette

by gvgseg » Tue Mar 02, 2010 9:25 am
I'm in a tough situation at the moment as I've been accepted by one school (School A) and waitlisted by another (School B). I'm leaning more toward the waitlisted school (School B).

I need to notify School A whether I will accept their offer by March 15th. I've already had multiple contacts with School B since being waitlisted. I've had a phone conversation with their admissions director to review my application, and also attended an information session where I spoke with the admissions director in person again. He said that he is optimistic about my chances and hopes to be able to let me know within a month.

I have not mentioned to School B that I've been accepted elsewhere. Would it be appropriate to call School B next week to notify them that I have been accepted elsewhere and must notify School A of my decision by the 15th. I'm hoping that this will speed up School B's decision, but I don't want it to backfire. Then again, I don't want to put down a deposit with School A if it can be avoided.

Thanks for your help.

Recommendation on how to proceed:

School A: Accepted
School W: Waitlisted
  • Notify school Waitlisted (W) of your acceptance to school Accepted (A), as it will increase your value but stress that you want to go to School W.
If school W says they can't respond by March 15th, ask school A for an extension on your decision to commit
If School A will not give an extension, and you still really want to go to school W and think there's a good shot commit to school A and continue to wait it out fr W (if you can afford this option, usually it's $1-3k).

No need to worry about that now...

Just got the call that I've been accepted off their waitlist!

I have a similar situation. I have been accepted to School X and am waiting to hear from Schools Y and Z. But School X wants to hear from me by March 24 and I do not think I will hear from both Y and Z before that time.

Do I....

(1) Put my deposit ($2,400) down on School X and wait for Y and Z?
(2) Call Y and Z and tell them I have been accepted into X and ask for their decisions earlier?
(3) Call X and ask for an extension?

Thoughts?
