Sentence Correction : Need Explanation

by bhupen83 » Sat Mar 30, 2013 10:31 pm
PITY the pontiff. Not only does he face the urgent task of sorting out sordid power struggles in the heart of the Vatican; in the wider world of Catholicism, rival political camps are eagerly looking forward to his first pronouncements on social and economic questions.

Can anyone please explain the use of "Not only" in the above paragraph.

I really doubt that this sentence is actually complete. Can you re-check your source? I'm asking you this because first, sentence doesn't make sense and second, correct idiom is " Not only X but also Y"; here x is present by y part is missing. Please verify your sentence so that we can help you.
