I thought GMAT RC do not criticize the authors

I read somewhere that GMAT RC answers do not go to the extreme of criticizing the passage author, similarly they do not go out completely supporting the passage.

In the attached example I did not go for the correct ans just because of this rule.

I found a GMATPrep example which contradicts this rule.

This is not criticizing the authors I think, it means that author criticizes the study mentioned.

Criticizing the authors is something like attacking the author, like:

question: what can be inferred about the author?
answer: author is stupid due to the argument ( :D )

something like that.

you can criticize a study but you cannot criticize author's view of women, african american, or generally the author's perception of certain minority groups. hope that clears it up!
