$$4 = x + {1 \over x}\,\,\,\,\mathop \Rightarrow \limits^{{\rm{squaring}}} \,\,\,\,16 = {x^2} + \left( {2 \cdot x \cdot {1 \over x}} \right) + {1 \over {{x^2}}}$$
$$? = {x^2} + {1 \over {{x^2}}} = 16 - 2 = 14$$

( x + 1/x )^2 = x^2 + 2x(1/x) + (1/x)^2 = x^2 + (1/x)^2 + 2 = 4^2 = 16.
Thus, x^2 + (1/x)^2 = ( x + 1/x )^2 - 2 = 16 - 2 = 14.
Therefore, the answer is C.
Answer: C
