Hello,
all you GMAT takers! Can somebody recommend a good course or program that's solely focused on improving the Quant performance? I do fairly well on the Verbal part (good enough to not drag a solid Quant score down) but I def need to work on my Quant. I have studied all the MGMAT books and 90% of the OG13 problems once so far but would like to intensify my Quant studies a little.
Thanks,
Icareon

Hi Icareon,
In the Quant section, how do you perform on the major categories of questions: DS, Algebra, Number Properties, etc? Are there any frequently-tested subjects that you consistently have problems with? And can you explain why?
I ask because difficulties in Quant usually come down a handful of reasons: not knowing the content, not doing organized work (silly mistakes), not using enough strategy.

I would say all of the above probably need improvement on my end (strategy, organization, content) but the areas where I have the most trouble are FDP and Number Properties, followed by Algebra and Word Problems.
In FDP I often get stuck doing the hand calculations and in Number Properties I miss the big picture (once I start reading the solution to start the problem,I can solve it fairly fast).
Should I redo the OG13 problem and start working with OG Quant Supplement book or first try to work on my understanding with a bootcamp type of course (Maghoosh, Empower or Economist)?
Thanks,
Icareon

Hi Icareon,
The problem that you're describing is based on a mix of content and tactics. I'd strongly suggest that before you redo any OG13 material that you put some time and effort into learning the proper tactics. A GMAT Course from any of the sources that you mentioned will likely help you immensely. To that end, you should take advantage of any free resources, trial accounts, etc. that are offered by any GMAT Course provider. You can then choose the one that best fits your personality, timeline and budget.

I'll start by noting that we (GMAT Prep Now) offer a quant-only GMAT prep course (https://www.gmatprepnow.com/prices)
To improve your quantitative score, I believe that you should compartmentalize your learning and take the time to master each topic (e.g., percents, ratios, exponents, statistics, etc.). This means that, for each topic, you should:
1) Learn the underlying concepts (rules, attributes, notation, etc.)
2) Learn GMAT-specific strategies related to that topic
3) Practice dozens of questions all related to that one topic.
4) Don't stop working on that topic until you have mastered it
Then, and only then, move on to the next topic.
To help you focus on one topic at a time, you can use BTG's tagging feature. For example, here are all of the questions tagged as statistics questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... statistics
See the left side of that linked page for more tag options.
While completing questions from the Official Guide (OG), you should you use an Error Log (aka Improvement Chart). You can find a free downloadable Improvement Chart here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-error-log. This will help you identify and strengthen your weak areas.
You should also spend a lot of time reviewing the responses from the Experts on this site. They model the steps one should take when tackling math problems.
In addition to learning the core concepts and GMAT-specific strategies, be sure to work on your endurance and test-taking skills (e.g., time management) by taking several practice tests. If you're interested, we have a free GMAT time management video at https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gener ... es?id=1244
Cheers,
Brent
