"by using" is an awkward phase. So, I would eliminate A & B straightaway. D is using possessive company's but we have plural companies here so eliminated. Between C & E, E is better as it says to profit, also, pay with the companies' earning looks better than using the companies'bupbebeo wrote:In a leveraged buyout, investors borrow huge sums of money to buy companies, hoping to pay off the debt by using the company's earnings and to profit richly by the later resale of the companies or their divisions.

ya its parallel question to pay off the debt with companies's earnings and to profit
in place of by using only using is better but option C is out because it is not pararllel.

in sentence correction i learned that
1.first compare all answer find the words which changes its form in each sentence.
2. find the error and eliminate the options
3.find the rules whether parallel,idioms,singular/plural forms/modifiers etcs then then eliminates other options.
4. when left with 1 or 2 options listen which sentence sounds better normally 80 % works
5.then choose yr answer

plz post your learnings also

bupbebeo ,
3/2 split is a process by which we narrow down the correct answer in first 30-40 secs.
GMAT answers are usually presented in a fashion that would lead you to choose b/w 2 sub-groups. One group will have one thing similar and other group will have other things similar. So, what we do first is to choose the sub-group based on whichever error strikes our eyes first. Then you don't even look at the other sub-set and proceed to search the right answer only in your choosen group.
Try to observer the answer patterns in question and you will see that you are saving your time.
Try to parse answers vertically before scanning each answer horizontally. This give a hint of changing patterns and you will come to know what exactly is changing among options, (tense is changing, Subject-verb agreement mismatch etc) then you pick your group and proceed to locate the best answer. Analysing each option horizontally, and then finding error in them is time consuming and not the right way to go about in GMAT.
