sales Problem

How the answer is $5000, what is the catch in the problem?

240 + (5% of total sales exceeding 800) = 450

total sales = x

240 + 5%(x-800) = 450
5%(x) = 450-240 + 40
5x = 25000
x = 5000

It looks like you approached it in a good way. I'm guessing you divided 21000/5 which gave you 4200. The thing you forgot was these are the sales in excess of $800, so you need to add 800 to the 4200. This would have given you the answer of $5000.
