Are the integers a, b, and c consecutive?

(1) b - a = c - b.

(2) The average of a, b, and c = b

Statement 1 is saying that the numbers are evenly-spaced (in other words, the space between a and b is the same as the space between b and c. This is true of consecutive numbers but also of many others like 4, 7, 10 or 100, 200, 300.

Statement 2 is saying that the average of all three numbers is the middle number. This is true of all evenly-spaced numbers, including consecutive numbers (like 3, 4, 5) but also of many others like the same groups as above: 4, 7, 10 or 100, 200, 300. If you add up all 3 in each set, and then divide by 3, you will see that you will get the middle number each time.

So each statement is insufficient, and combining them does not change anything.
