Endangered species

by italian7745 » Tue Aug 11, 2009 3:59 am
Publicity campaigns for endangered species are unlikely to have much impact on the most important environmental problems, for while the ease of attributing feelings to large mammals facilitates evoking sympathy for them, it is more difficult to elicit sympathy for other kinds of organisms, such as the soil microorganisms on which large ecosystems and agriculture depend.

Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) The most important environmental problems involve endangered species other than large mammals.

(B) Microorganisms cannot experience pain or have other feelings.

(C) Publicity campaigns for the environment are the most effective when they elicit sympathy for some organism.

(D) People ignore environmental problems unless they believe the problems will affect creatures with which they sympathize.

(E) An organism can be environmentally significant only if it affects large ecosystems or agriculture.

C

Public campaigns for endangered species of animals are effective, but we do not yet know why they are. The passage goes on to state that endangered species of animals evoke more sympathy than do microorganisms. The eliciting of sympathy must be what makes the campaigns for animals more effective than campaigns for the environment.

Choice is between C and D,

D is the best answer. Because Choice C speaks: Publicity campaigns for the environment are the most effective when they elicit sympathy for some organism.

Probably U can reject A because u can't surely say the most important environmental problems involve both endangered species and large mammals. .

A for me since conclusion is about most important env problems and A acts as a missing link between conclusion and premise.

IMO C.

'while the ease of attributing feelings to large mammals facilitates evoking sympathy for them...'

am implicit link is made beween success of publicity campaigns and evoking sympathy.

will someone pl. tell 'what will be the exact negation of statement D?'

In statements containing 'unless' , how to negate it?
