The colorization of black-and-white films by computers is defended by those who own the film rights, for the process can mean increased revenues for them; many others in the film industry, however, contend that the technique degrades major works of art, which they liken to putting lipstick on a Greek statue.
(A) which they liken to putting lipstick on a Greek statue
(B) which they liken to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it
(C) which they liken to lipstick put on a Greek statue
(D) likening it to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it
(E) likening it to putting lipstick on a Greek statue

Which should be used to refer a *noun*, here the noun is "technique".
Comparison is between the technique and "to put lipstick on a a Greek Statue"

A

Whats the OA.?

B- Passive
C - incorrect comparison - Here technique is compared to lipstick, it should be the entire process.
D - incorrect comparison
E - it? Pronoun-Antecedent ?

My stake on E, though not sure.

"they liken to putting" sounded absurd to me in A

others change the meaning of original sentence.

E uses "likening it to putting" - which is better than A

where "it" refers to nearest singular noun "technique".

(A) which they liken to putting lipstick on a Greek statue
[WHICH here refers to works of art. And this dose not make sense as the technique is compared to process of putting lipstick on Greek statue, eliminate ]

(B) which they liken to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it
[WHICH here refers to works of art. And this dose not make sense as the technique is compared to process of putting lipstick on Greek statue, eliminate ]

(C) which they liken to lipstick put on a Greek statue
[WHICH here refers to works of art. And this dose not make sense as the technique is compared to process of putting lipstick on Greek statue, eliminate ]

(D) likening it to a Greek statue with lipstick put on it
[Comparison is incorrect. Technique is compared with Statue, eliminate ]

(E) likening it to putting lipstick on a Greek statue
[Correct the pronoun IT here clearly refers to TECHNIQUE and comparison is also correct. ]
