Prob

by heshamelaziry » Wed Nov 04, 2009 6:05 pm
A team has a record of 12 wins and 13 losses for the season. Three games remain. If the probability of winning each remaining game is 1/2, and there are no draws, what is the probability that the team will finish the season with a winning record ?

1/8

1/4

3/8

1/2

5/8

1/4

The team needs atleast 2 wins, so the prob is 1/2*1/2.

The team needs to win the remaining 3 matches to get a score of 15-13..
so , 1/8 is right

What if the last game is lost? It will be a draw. Since theq uestion requires us to calculate the probability that the team will finish the season with a winning record , all three games need to be considered.

Hope it clarifies.

Yeah it should be 1/8.

Think about it. The team is has 12 wins, 13 losses. 3 games remain.

If they win 2 and lose 1, their final record will be 14 wins, 14 losses.

So they will need to win of their remaining games. Probablily of that is 1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/8.
