APPLYING IN THE FALL? Read this...

Hey All,

We have gotten a few posts and PMs about preparing for next year’s MBA applications. First of all, I think it’s great that many of you are already thinking/preparing for the upcoming year. While it is probably too early to start your applications (essays), there are many things you can do NOW to help your candidacy. Here are a few suggestions:

- Take the GMAT: If possible, try to take the GMAT a few months before you start applying. That way, if you are not happy with your score you have time to re-take the exam. Also, MBA applications (including essays, LORs, school transcripts) are quite a time consuming process…so if you have time now, get the GMAT exam out of the way.

- Consider taking post-grad courses: If you are not happy with your GPA, a great way to ‘boost’ your academic profile is taking one or two post-grad courses… such as Statistics, Calculus, Intro. Accounting. While your grade in these courses will not impact your GPA, they can help demonstrate to AdCom (along with other aspects of your application) your ability to handle the analytical rigor of the program.

- Build your extra-curricular activities: Top MBA programs expect candidates to have extra-curricular activities… and preferably post-college. Now is a great time to start a volunteer opportunity that you can devote a few hours a month (until you apply) to help better position your candidacy.

- Visit prospective schools. In addition to your research, consider visiting the schools and developing a network of contacts that could serve as a resource when you start your applications.

- Shoot for Round One: Many believe that applying in R1 gives you a ever-so-slight advantage over other rounds. Since deadlines are still several months away, plan on applying to your top choices (if not all schools) by R1. Again, applying in R1 may only give you a slight advantage… in these competitive times; that whatever you can get!!!

- Read an MBA Admissions book: Those of you who read my posts know I am a HUGE fan of MBA Admissions Books. It’s a great way to understand the ‘scary’ world of MBA admissions. If anything, you will better understand the process and get a better sense of what you need to start thinking about before applying. My favs are “Get Into a Top MBA Program” and “Your MBA Game Plan”

- Lastly and most importantly – LET US KNOW HOW WE CAN HELP! Veritas Prep has assembled an experienced team of MBA Admissions Consultants and GMAT Instructors that are happy to provide insight and advice on this board! So ask us any questions you might have!

Good luck!

Oh - and one last thing... new applications (for the upcoming admission year) are usually posted in the summer. However the questions are 'usually' the same or similar to the previous year.
