UT Mccombs vs SMU Cox Part Time MBA

by anandmot » Mon Apr 23, 2012 8:18 am
My Profile:

Eduction: Bachelor in Engg & M.S in Software Systems
11+ years of Telecom engineering Experience with top tier Telecom companies
GPA:3.3
GMAT: Scheduled to take in few weeks.

I'm currently working on essays for Mccombs & SMU Cox. My choices are limited to PT MBA DFW programs as i currently work in Dallas.

What are the chances of my acceptance in Mccombs & SMU ? what is the avg GMAT score for PT program with my experience. I'm more inclined towards Mccombs with reputation it carries over other texas MBA PT programs.

UTD SOM - cost wise this program is good but I want to do in Mccombs or SMU for the brand.

Appreciate your inputs.

Class profile of McCombs MBA DFW:

Texas MBA at Dallas/Fort Worth Class of 2013 Profile:

Number of students 76
Average Age 30
Women 18%
Average GPA 3.4
Average GMAT 660
Average work experience 6 years

Your work experience and GPA are good. GMAT range for DFW program is 600-750 with avg 660. Admission also depends on the essays and interview. McCombs is a top tier MBA program and is known very well outside Texas. SMU Cox is a good regional school but doesn't have nationwide reputation. It ranks far below McCombs in both quality of students and teaching.

1)SMU COX PMBA Class Profile:

Class Size 94
Average Age 30
Women 19%
Men 81%
Foreign Nationals 9%
Average GMAT 591
Median GMAT 590
GMAT Range 550-720
Average Years Work Experience 6.5
Average Undergraduate GPA 3.1

2)McCombs ranks No. 1 for best business school professors( Princeton ranking 2011)

3) McCombs provides better employment numbers:

McCombs MBA Class of 2011 Full-time Salary Statistics:

Avg Base Salary: $101,412
Avg Signing bonus: $23,085
Avg guaranteed bonus: $19,654

SMU COX MBA CLASS OF 2011 EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS:

Avg Base Salary: $84,465
Avg Signing bonus: $12,333

I am a 2nd year McCombs MBA student(DFW program) and I'm quite confident McCombs is a better brand and better value than SMU Cox. Both programs cost about the same..I think. It may be easier to get into SMU Cox PMBA program. But you will have better career opportunities at McCombs part-time MBA.

txguy2012 or OP,

I applied to McCOmbs & Cox. Exec program so no GMAT. Got reject from McCombs, likely bcos of R3 application, same common profile.

Not able to convince my mind if I should go to Cox, even if admitted. I believe McCombs will have better reach than Cox. Now that you guys have completed your MBA, do you still use and think the brand carries that much value. Do you use it. Should I just get it done with Cox and not wait for another year to do with McCombs. Though I don;t plan to move out of Dallas, I don;t want to restrict either. In that even McCombs is not a great brand outside TX. Pulling my hair. Let me know if you have pointers. thx

I would definitely choose UT Mccombs over SMU Cox. I think SMU has a very regional draw and might be stronger in Dallas. But UT Mccombs will give you far more flexibility and a huge undergraduate alumni network that you can tap into that is strong in Dallas and every other part of Texas and surrounding areas.
