How I reach to the answer:

Due to Vs Because of

Due to is used if the verb before "due to" is auxiliary verb

Example:
The cancellation of the program was due to rain.
The delay of her arrival was due to illness.

"Because of" is used if the verb before "because of" is a main verb.

Example:
The program was canceled because of rain.
She made delay to arrive because of illness.

--> We can eliminate the options A and B because the verb is "become", a main verb.

Comparison MUST be parallel:

Because X than because Y, where X and Y are clauses. This eliminates C.

Because of + NOUN is the correct use. So we need to use "because of their bodies' burning".

Here, bodies needs an apostrophe ('). Eliminate E.

Answer is D.

This part is not true. She lost her job due to circumstances beyond her control (for example) is fine.
