Profile Evaluation for Part-Time MBA

by cjones9 » Thu Dec 10, 2015 8:27 pm
Hi all, can someone provide their perspective on my admission chances to the following part-time weekend programs:

1. Booth
2. Kellogg
3. Haas
4. Stern
5. Ross
6. Tepper

My profile is as follows:

Age: 27
Profile Highlights: Economically disadvantaged background. Extensive leadership and volunteer experience. In addition, I have published numerous papers that have served as the basis for a company, which I now serve as CEO.

Educational
UG Degrees/GPA: Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering; Biochemistry / 3.41 GPA ***GPA is lower due to unrelated working obligations during this period
Grad Degrees/GPA: Chemical Engineering (Ph.D.) / 3.65
GMAT: Haven't taken yet (test date is 12/16), but I am testing between 650-700 consistently

Professional Experience
~1 years startup experience
~5 years of research experience: Published in the most highly prestigious journals (e.g., PNAS)
~2 years of teaching experience in a university setting

Leadership Experience
~5 years of managerial experience (from startup/research experiences)
~Founded the company that I serve as CEO. During initial period, I assemble the core-team, secured the initial capital, and directly ran the research division (which has now been taken over by the CTO).

Volunteer Experience
-2 years in Big Brother Big Sister
-2 years working with individuals with special needs
-Served as a graduate school ambassador for my department/university
-Selected as a lead to assist training of all new incoming teaching assistants

Any insight and/or suggestions would help tremendously.

Best,

Charles

Charles,

Thanks for the post. If you can get 700 or near that on the GMAT you would have a nice profile for most of the schools below. That said, I would want to learn more about your business. Revenue, employees, product/service? It is important given you don't have a lot of experience in it, so if it is a thriving business and you need the MBA to take it to the next level, that makes a great story. I work with a lot of entrepreneurs and depending on your background story you can reach for all of the programs on the list.

If you are interested in help with putting together a powerful story and set of essays, send me an email to discuss how I can help: [email protected]

Best,
Scott

From my experience, you are competitive for all of these programs as your GPA is a strength (given the difficulty of an Engineering degree) and your GMAT will be in-line with the average GMAT scores for these part-time programs.

However, where are you based because wouldn't that influence your choice? If your job is mobile and you can move to the area where the school is located, then you should proactively let the admissions committees know this.

Good luck,

Thank you everyone for the advice. I finally received my official GMAT score of 690 (49Q, 34V, 6 AWA, 5 IR). To separately answer the previous questions,

1. Company information - we are vaccine-based company that is less than a year old and based in Buffalo, NY. Currently we have raised over $1M in seed funding (through state and national agencies) and recruited a world class board and SAB. That stated, we are currently in the process of preparing our FDA clinical trials application (termed an IND for reference). In terms of direct reports, I manage five individuals on a daily basis.

Given these details, would I still be viewed as competitive at these programs? Also, can anyone provide details on the admission statistics to any of these programs other than the average GMAT, GPA, and acceptance rate?
