Teratomas are unusual forms of cancer because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.

(A) because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone
(B) because they are composed of tissues like tooth and bone that are
(C) because they are composed of tissues, like tooth and bone, tissues
(D) in that their composition, tissues such as tooth and bone, is
(E) in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone, tissues
OA: E
What is the problem in C?

Please explain.

The original sentence is using LIKE to give examples . We always use SUCH AS to give examples and hence we can eliminate A , B and C .

In D and E IN THAT they/ their ---- is an old construction no longer used in modern English , but the phrase is not wrong and has the same meaning as BECAUSE .

Do not eliminate D and E just because of IN THAT they/ their construction.

E is better than D .

in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone --- is an appositive defining the term tissues . The construction looks weird because of repetition of the word TISSUES.

A similar example is :

Yellow jackets number among the 900 or so species of the world's social wasps, wasps living in a highly cooperative and organized society where they consist almost entirely of females-the queen and her sterile female workers.

HTH.
"Know thyself" and "Nothing in excess"

E is the best

A. Changes meaning, no connection between two sentence
Teratomas are unusual forms of cancer because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone

not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.
What not normally found ? tissues, not "tooth and bone"
there is no connection between the two sentences

B. like cannot be used, it says they are tissues something like toot and bone, but not tooth and bone, always in these cases, "such as" is correct. It is a classic mistake of like.

C same error as in B

D same error as in A

E Correct, uses such as, uses "tissues" to connect the two sentences.
hope this helps....
