Despite & Although

by ranjeet75 » Sat May 05, 2012 9:00 pm
With only 0.06 percent world's population, Freakland won 14 gold medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

A. With
B. As
C. Being
D. Despite having
E. Although accounting for

OA is
E

Whether the use of "ing-verb" after "despite" is wrong. If no, why option D is wrong? Moreover "with" also shows some contrast, then why Option A is wrong.
IMO is A. What is the source of this problem. Although is not followed by any clause so in anyway E can not be a correct answer.

A. With
B. As
C. Being
D. Despite having
E. Although accounting for

OA is E

I used to be very confused when it comes to the usage of 'Although', 'Even though' and 'Despite' but it's quite clear to me now. Let me explain how it becomes easy for me:
'Although' and 'Even though' are used when in negative circumstances, something positive happens.
Format: Although <negative circumstance>, <Positive outcome>
Ex: Although it was raining, we went to movies.
'Even though' is extreme 'Although'
Ex: Even though it was raining very heavily, we went to movies.

'Despite' is used when in positive circumstance, something negative happens.
Format: Despite <positive circumstance>, <negative outcome>
Ex: Despite X's huge wealth, his/hers life is a misery.

Hope it helps!

The reasoning above looks reasonable. Can you please help me with the source where you found this?

Even though professional sports leagues may agree that player steroid use is a major problem, posing a threat to the integrity of each league's respective sport, and that immediate action needs to be taken, there is no consensus on the best course of action.
A Even though professional sports leagues may agree that
B However much professional sports leagues may agree
C Agreement exists among professional sports leagues that
D Despite professional sports leagues may agree that
E Although professional sports leagues agree

OA is A

Despite <positive circumstance>, <negative outcome> !! Seems this theory does not match with OA.
Can someone explain how why option D is incorrect.
